« Biscar? You said Biskar! »
Most of the Gascony part spoke a language close to the Basque one untill about the year 1000. Therefore, several traces exist in the language and toponymy from Gascony...
... Biscar finds exactly its correspondance with the Basque word "Biskar", which means « back » or in a more general way « hill ». It gave the verb « biscarrar », which means « to crop » the back of the sheeps, in the local language.
However, Biscarrosse stands on an area of the coast where ancient dunes are present and were elaborated in the 4th millennium BC. No matter where they are from, La Teste, Biscarrosse, Bias or St Julien, those woody dunes, since the antiquity, are called « mountains ».
It is hardly surprising that the first inhabitants named Biscarrosse, the place where there are hills, this site that must have stood from the wide surrounding plain.
As for the spelling, the logic would want us to write « Biscar » followed by the suffix « Osse », « Biscarosse ». Nevertheless, the common use revealed the written form « Biscarrosse » which correspond to the several matching names (« Biscarrués», « Viscarra », « Biscarri »…).
